THINGS ARE MOVING

Things are moving fast in Broward. Check out the Broward Blog. The link is on the left.

The vote for Chief Judge ended in a run-off:

Memo From Chris Stotz/17th Circuit Public Information Officer:

"In an orderly and credible special election for chief judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida, monitored by all three chief judge candidates as well as Judge Peter Weinstein, a majority was not reached.
A run-off election will take place between Judge Thomas M. Lynch, IV and Judge Victor Tobin on July 17, 2007 at 8:30 am, with the same election procedures as today.

ELECTION RESULTS - July 3, 2007
JUDGE # of VOTES
Judge Backman 22
Judge Lynch 33
Judge Tobin 30
Judge S. Kaplan 1 (write in)

Got to love a court system that is so under fire and scrutiny that their information officer brags that the collection of Judges acted orderly and the election was credible.

The Broward blog is full of great links today, including (we are not making this up) comments by soon to be former Chief Judge Dale Ross that he "regrets resigning" as chief Judge.
Guess those long days looming in Probate don't look so promising.

Judge "NHI" Greene has been cleared by the JQC. Apparently a Judge is not required to believe all litigants are "Human" in order to remain a Judge.
To his credit, Judge Greene did tell the JQC he was embarrassed being associated with a term that some thought might have racist overtones.

Rumpole says: He should be embarrassed. If Judge Greene was indeed innocent, he might be more sensitive in the future to people coming to court saying they have been accused of something they didn't do.

SATZ SEEKS INVESTIGATION OF JUDGE ZACK
The Broward Blog also has links to the Sun Sentinel articles on Broward's Judicial Hall of Shame, the election for chief Judge, and the news, which broke last night, that The Broward State Attorneys Office has formally requested that the Governor appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate whether Judge Zack broke any laws in accepting a loan from an attorney who practiced in his court.

Yes, weeks after Channel 7 broke the story on Zack accepting money, the Broward State Attorneys office swung into action and requested an investigation. In other news Broward State Attorney Mike Satz issued a news release applauding the election of Jimmy Carter over Gerald Ford.

Finally, there is also a nice comment by attorney Norm Kent on the Broward Blog about doing the right thing. Word is no Judge in Broward has read the article.

And not to leave my favourite federal blogger out of the props, he continues his great coverage of the Padilla trial by informing us today that when the jury arrived for court

row one was dressed in red

row two was dressed in white

row three was dressed in blue.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY.

Take a moment today to remember all of the brave men and women who have fought so valliantly for our country, for our freedom, stemming back over 200 years. We are fortunate to live in a country where we may speak our minds without fear and choose the paths that our lives take.

For the last six years, our young men and women have been fighting battles in nations halfway around the world. Some went by choice, others went because they had made a commitment to serve the United States, no matter what the fight.

Over 3,000 American men and women have been killed in Iraq. It likely that someone you know has lost a loved one in this war. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have died as well.

Here in America, we have problems of our own. We have a Congress that does not wish to act in the face of the most important issue to face America in decades: Immigration reform. 10 million people risked their lives to come to this country, to work, to have a family, and to enjoy the freedoms that we all take for granted because they are a part of our mundane daily lives.

So today, as you enjoy time with friends, food and drink, and the occassional firework, take a minute, and thank not only the founders of this nation, those brave men who stood up against tyranny and oppression to give us the life we have today, but also thank the men and women serving in the military, and the families of these men and women who have made such an amazing sacrifice. Finally, take a moment of silence to honor all those who have died fighting in Iraq.

Tomorrow, reach out to your politicians. Urge them to stand up, and be brave, and take action, because freedom is only as strong as those individuals willing to protect it and preserve it.

With all of the problems they are having in Broward, do they really want a chief judge named "Lynch"?

Just a thought.

west palm, broward and dade should all become one big judicial circuit. The 3rd DCA should take over the 4DCA and become as one.

The broward blog should take over the JBB and Rumpoles house payments, car payments and spa bills.

Gotta love this...

"SCORE: BONDSMAN 0,CROOKED LAWYERS 0, REGULAR GUYS(GALS) WIN. NOW BAIL BONDS CAN ONLY BE POSTED AT TGK, AND BNDSMAN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HANG OUT AT DCJ FOR ANY REASON. MAYBE NOW THE HUSTLING WILL STOP AND WE WILL SEE AN INCREASE IN BUSINESS. ONE (WON) FOR THE REGULAR GUYS (AND GALS.)"

Did I miss something when did this happen. Is Slom and Blake up to something? Why did I not get the memo on this. Heck half of my clients come from the guys who hustle down at the DCJ. I AM NOT VERY HAPPY.

On a lighter note Rumpole will be singing the national amthem on the steps of the REGJB at 6PM EST.

Long time and careful readers of the blog know that for very specific reasons, we never announce beforehand where we will be singing.

First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov linked the possible move to US plans for a missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Russia has already threatened to hit back by targeting missiles at Europe

Russian defence analyst and Miami Lawyer Q described Mr Ivanov's comments were an "empty threat".

Russia had no missiles with the right range to be fired from Kaliningrad and hit the proposed interceptors in Poland, he said.

"It's a threat aimed at the Polish people" designed to encourage them to protest against the US plans, the Q said.

NEW YORK -- In a gut-busting showdown that combined drama, daring and indigestion, Joey Chestnut emerged Wednesday as the world's hot dog eating champion, knocking off six-time winner Takeru Kobayashi in a record-setting yet repulsive triumph.

Chestnut, the great red, white and blue hope in the annual Fourth of July competition, broke his own world record by inhaling 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes -- a staggering one every 10.9 seconds before a screaming crowd in Coney Island.

"If I needed to eat another one right now, I could,'' the 23-year-old Californian said after receiving the mustard yellow belt emblematic of hot dog eating supremacy.

Kobayashi, the Japanese eating machine, recently had a wisdom tooth extracted and received chiropractic treatment due to a sore jaw. But the winner of every Nathan's hot dog competition from 2001 to 2006 showed no ill effects as he stayed with Chestnut frank-for-frank until the very end of the 12-minute competition.

Once the contest ended, the runner-up suffered a reversal -- competitive eating-speak for barfing -- leading to a deduction from his final total. Kobayashi finished with 63 HDBs (hot dogs and buns eaten) in his best performance ever.

"Obviously, the last bit exited his mouth quite dramatically,'' said Rich Shea of the International Federation of Competitive Eating. Kobayashi's gastric distress was the only sour note in the tube-steak tussle, which aired nationally on ESPN.

The two gustatory gladiators quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the 17 competitors, processing more beef than a slaughterhouse within the first few minutes. The two had each downed 60 hot dogs with 60 seconds to go when Chestnut -- the veins on his forehead extended -- put away the final franks to end Kobayashi's reign.

Kobayashi, through a translator, promised to return for the 2008 event.

"This title's been held by Kobayashi for six years, so it's about time it came home,'' said Chestnut, holding an American flag in his arms. "I knew going into this contest that Kobayashi was going to give 100 percent.''

Bondsmen will continue to hustle through correction officers and inmates as usual, and now they'll hang out at the TGK and outside 5-3.

Stupid "Judge" Tinkler-Mendez. She's dumber than a rock. She'd be better off doing appeals for the one and only Dick Cheney.
